LAGOS- ALWAYS IN MOTION: UK, NIGERIAN SCHOLARS EXAMINE THE PORT CITY’S SPIRIT OF ENTERPRISE

Trade, faith and youth culture have shaped Lagos and continue to drive its reinvention.

These connections were explored at Lagos- Always in Motion, a conversation organised by the Universities of Birmingham and Lagos.

Held at the British Council in Lagos on Friday, the event formed part of a visit to strengthen collaboration between the institutions.

The convener, Professor Insa Nolte, examined religious life and print culture. Maritime historian, Distinguished Professor Ayodeji Olukoju, traced indigenous enterprise and Lagos’s growth as a port city and Nigeria’s commercial capital.

Dr Felix Ajiola discussed youth culture, inequality, the Hustle Kingdom and online fraud.

Speaking to Maritime TV Africa, Olukoju outlined what this history could mean for port development and planning. Nolte reflected on the city’s enterprising spirit and how Nigeria’s achievements could challenge perceptions abroad.

For Lagos, the conversation linked an understanding of its past with practical questions about its future — how it builds, trades and creates opportunities for its people.
