  • Video Duration: 44:15

Do you know that only 1.2% of the global seafarer workforce are women, that’s according to the BIMCO/ICS 2021 Seafarer Workforce report which estimated that about 24,059 women are seafarers. At the time, this was a 45.8% increase compared with a 2015 report. While the true statistics in Africa is hazy, within the past few years, the International Maritime Organization has encouraged member states to develop policies that encourage increased female participation, inspiring inclusion.

The occasion of the International Women’s Day which will hold in four days opens an opportunity for us to review how far African states have gone with female inclusion and what pro female policies have been put in place.

Our guest is Koni Duniya is the President, Female Seafarers Association of Nigeria (FESAN). She was a seafarer for 12 years but has moved to onshore side of work in the maritime sector.
