The Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control for West and Central African Region, the Abuja MoU, has launched a five-year capacity-building programme to strengthen Port State Control across the region.
Supported by Lloyd's Register Foundation, the project was unveiled in Lagos during a regional workshop bringing together Directors-General, Chief Executive Officers and Heads of Port State Control from maritime administrations across West and Central Africa.
The initiative aims to strengthen inspector competence, improve regulatory alignment, promote data-driven inspections and enhance transparency and regional cooperation in support of safer shipping.
Nigeria's Minister of Marine and Blue Economy and Vice Chair of the Abuja MoU, Dr Adegboyega Oyetola, said the programme reflects the region's commitment to building a stronger and more effective Port State Control regime.
The Secretary-General of the Abuja MoU, Captain Sunday Umoren, said the project will strengthen the capacity of Port State Control Officers and improve the effectiveness of ship inspections across the region.
Mr Sam Megwa, the Lloyd's Register Foundation Project Lead, said the Foundation's support is focused on building long-term institutional capacity, strengthening regional collaboration and contributing to safer maritime systems across West and Central Africa.
